Title: Margaret Mahler, a Biography of the Psychoanalyst Author: Alma Halbert Bond Publisher: McFarland Reviewer: Marilyn Meredith – AAA Member Ms. Bond has written a compressive and detailed biography about a brilliant, complex and often difficult woman. The story begins with the rejection of Margaret by her mother when she was an infant and continues into her childhood. We are allowed insights into what molded and created this intelligent woman who became a brilliant psychoanalyst who specialized in children's psychological problems. We're given a look into her relationships with her hired help, her female friends, her love interests, her family, and the creation of her therapeutic nursery and a glimpse at the work done there with deeply troubled children. Recommended for those interested in reading about unusual people and also for those interested in Mahler's concepts on the relationships between mothers and their infants. Though this is a scholarly book compete with Glossary, Chapter Notes and Bibliography, the author has a readable writing style.
